While reviewing my past articles, I ran across the thoughts in the 2005 Nov - Dec issue of "The El Bekalan", in which then Ill. Suehs spoke of the importance of "retention and restoration" when thinking of membership issues. I would like to add to that what must be the most important of the "R" words of membership...relevance. Relevance is the extent to which the activity is consistent with the priorities and policies of the target Group (sic. new members). The importance of relevance lies in the differential feature of a subset of information that makes it of interest to the receiver. Relevance is a key concept, because it depends on the subject receiving the information. What is relevant for one person can be useless for another and hence can be disinformation or even 'rubbish'. |

For the first eight months of 1944 the 214th AAA 90mm Gun Battalion remained on the east coast of the island of Corsica to provide protection for several airfields which were home to bomber squadrons, mostly B25s. In the spring of that year Captain Richard C. Matlack joined the battalion as the new Radar Officer arrived about the same time to replace the outmoded SCR 268s. Each SCR 584 unit was housed in a semi-trailer containing the radar equipment consisting of a large disc mounted on top of the semi-trailer, the truck - tractor to pull the semi - trailer and an accompanying gasoline powered power plant towed bya2 - 1/2 ton truck for each 90mm gun battery. |

If you missed it, keep your eye on the lapels of your brothers, and see who sports a "365 Club" recognition pin. When you see one, be sure to thank them! Sincerely, Ralph C. At a recent Valley stated meeting, I was pleased to see one of the largest crowds we have had in some time. Perhaps it looked so because of our smaller venue, but never - the - less, it was great to be a part of. Since recently volunteering to again act as Valley Membership Chairman this made me think that perhaps we have an advantage over other Valleys which if properly exploited can be to our advantage. We are not the largest local Valley, nor do we own an expansive building. What we can offer a potential new member, however, is an opportunity to join a small yet vibrant community of masons. Acalanes Fellowship lodge in Northern California calls themselves "the Friendliest Lodge in California". They have used that description so often that they have become not only that in their own eyes, but also in the eyes of the other Lodges in the area. No member ever goes ungreeted by each and every member at each and every event. Always remember that perception becomes reality. I propose that we take advantage of our size to become close with one another, and transform our Valley into the "friendliest Valley in California." This will, of course, take a lot of work on our part, because no longer would it be acceptable for any of us to not acknowledge each other with a handshake and a greeting. If we work at, and transform ourselves into the "friendliest Valley in California," we will standout among other Valleys, and I believe draw new members to our Valley rather that allowing them to go elsewhere simply because of size, a building, or differing personalities. We want the friendliest brothers here. So next time you visit, do the Masonic thing, and extend your hand to a brother and make him honestly welcome. Perhaps this can be a step to rejuvenate your enthusiasm as well as that of our Valley. Gary Peterson, 32°, K.·.C.·.C.·.H.·. |
