Ways and Means

Brethren:

Month after month for the last year we have been listening to the report of the Treasurer and all wondering the same set of questions. "Are we going to run out of money?" "If so, when?"

The current economic climate has taken its toll on all organizations from the largest multi-national corporations to the smallest of the "mom and pop" shops and everything in between including nonprofit organizations. Our Valley is no exception in this whirlwind. So "what can we do?" And more importantly "what have we been doing?"

First, the Valley leadership has been vigilant in reviewing the expenditures and coming up with ways in which we can reduce the costs of running the Valley. Some have included moving our meeting location to the El Bekal Shrine Center where our Brothers have welcomed us and provided us an opportunity to cut some overhead. There are other reductions that have been identified and are now in the process of being priced out with other potential vendors. But let's make no mistake about this. Cutting overhead alone will not get us to where we need to be. In fact, simply cutting alone may lead us to eventually cut the Valley of Santa Ana from existence over time. This is not acceptable.

Secondly, and most importantly, the Valley leadership has identified a number of ways in which we can increase the revenues of the Valley. Unlike our Blue Lodges, we do not have the authority to raise dues. Such a decision belongs to the SGIG of the Orient of California alone and impacts the entire Orient. So now "how can we increase our revenues and increase the visibility and overall enjoyment we all share in the Valley?" The following programs are designed to do just this:

Join the new "Century Club." This program is designed to recognize those Brothers who donate $100 to the general operations of the Valley. Unless you choose to remain anonymous, you will be recognized with a lapel pin and have your name published in the Scottish Rite News as a member of the "Century Club."

Advertise your business in the Scottish Rite News. If your Brothers don't know about your business then how can "we join in promoting each other's welfare and rejoicing in each other's prosperity"? The cost is $250 per year for a business card size advertisement.

Become a "Supporter" of the Scottish Rite News. No level of support is too small or too large for this group. There have been many great articles published by our Brothers pursuing further Light in Masonry. Without your support the TB may have its frequency of publication cut and we all lose out on the Light being imparted.

Become a "Meeting Sponsor." For an amount of $500 you can be recognized as the "Sponsor" of one of our Stated Meetings or for $250 you can become a "Co-Sponsor". You will have your name published in the TB and special recognition given at the Stated Meeting and Dinner you have sponsored.

Recruit 2 new Masons each year from your Blue Lodge to either affiliate with our Valley or become a new Scottish Rite Mason. Contact Rick Wood to learn how to become an "Ambassador" to your Blue Lodge for the Valley or just start recruiting.

Volunteer to help track down "lost" Brothers. There are many Brothers still delinquent on their dues. We can use your help in tracking them down if they are from your Blue Lodge.

As you can see, the Valley leadership has been very busy in designing "WAYS" in which we can create the "MEANS" to maintain the financial strength of our Valley. Many Brothers have already stepped forward with other ideas and programs that they wish to sponsor. This list is in no way meant to be the all inclusive list. If you have other ideas then step up and communicate your ideas to the Leadership Team. In adversity we find strength. In strength we find leaders. In our leaders we find the future of our Valley and the Craft.

Fraternally,

Arthur L Salazar Jr., 32°
