WELCOME TO THE SCOTTISH RITE!

SOME GENERAL INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

House of the Temple

The House of the Temple is the name of the official headquarters of the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction. It is located at 1733 Sixteenth Street, N.W, Washington, D.C., just one mile directly north from the White House. The building was designed by John Russell Pope (America's foremost neoclassical architect), and patterned after the famed Mausoleum at Halicarnasis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient

world. It was constructed between 1911 and 1915, and is regarded as the finest example of Pope's architectural genius. Other buildings designed by Pope include the Jefferson Memorial and the National Archives. In addition to office space, the building includes several museum spaces and a magnificent library. The House of the Temple is open for free public tours Mondays through Fridays (except holidays).
